Jonathan Chen and Nichole Tomsho Receive Awards at Graduation Banquet
On July 11th, 2024, the graduating class of Pathologists’ Assistants celebrated at a banquet held at The University Club in Durham, North Carolina.
During the event, Jonathan Chen, MHS, PA (ASCP)CM, received the Resident Teaching Award, which is given to a pathologists’ assistant whom residents have voted as having distinguished themselves in teaching effort and ability.

April 14th was National Pathologists’ Assistant Day, and we’re shining a spotlight on Staff Pathologists’ Assistant Jonathan Chen, MHS, PA(ASCP)CM, who joined the Duke Surgical Pathology Lab in 2019.

On Oct. 27th, Pathologists’ Assistant Program Director Michelle Johnson, MHS, PA, (ASCAP) CM, presented at an Exploring Cancer webinar series titled “Careers in Cancer,” along with Senior Community Health Educator Veronica Carlisle, MPH, CHES; Physician Assistant Jessica Veale, MHS, PA-C; and Patient Navigator Manager Valarie Worthy, RN, MSN.
Salem Sullivan Wins AAPA Travel Grant
Pathologists’ Assistant student Salem Sullivan has been awarded an American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA) Travel Grant to attend the AAPA 48th Annual Fall Conference in Baltimore from Sept. 24th-28th.

Steven Conlon Receives 2023 Pamela Vollmer Teaching Award
On July 13, 2023, Steven “Steve” Conlon received the 2023 Pamela Vollmer Teaching Award at the Pathologists' Assistant graduation dinner. Each year, the graduating Pathologists’ Assistant class awards the individual whose knowledge, teaching and professionalism has had the most positive impact on their training. Steve is our senior medical photographer and course coordinator for the PA program photography class, and has been with our department for 40 years.
