The Duke Graduate Program in Pathobiology and Translational Biosciences is committed to promoting excellence at all levels in the biological sciences. We strive to provide a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all students, faculty, and staff. Duke University values the broad spectrum of human experience and strives to create an open environment that enriches learning opportunities for all members of the community. At the graduate school level, these efforts are coordinated through the Graduate School Office of Student Affairs and the IDEALS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Advancement, and Leadership) office.
The Graduate School awards Dean's Graduate Fellowships to "students who—by reason of their backgrounds and life experiences—contribute to a fuller representation of perspectives within the academic life of the University." The Dean’s Graduate Fellowship provides a 12-month stipend during the first two years of study and a $7,500 stipend supplement in the third and fourth years of study. The Dean’s Graduate Fellowship also covers partial tuition (i.e. tuition remission) and full fees for the fall, spring and summer terms during the first two years of study. The Graduate School provides a scholarship for the balance of the tuition. This award is offered through The Graduate School. Incoming students are nominated by their department; no direct application is necessary.
The Duke BioCoRE (Biosciences Collaborative for Research Engagement) Scholars Program engages graduate students and faculty in a supportive community of scientists excited about the biosciences, and provides opportunities for student research and career development for all participants. Its mission is to promote the holistic development of scholars throughout their PhD training within the Duke University School of Medicine. All incoming graduate students are invited to apply
For the past 18 years, Duke has conducted a 10-week long summer research program called the Duke Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP), aimed at exposing prospective undergraduate students to basic science research. This program, administered by the Graduate Students Affairs office, brings in high-caliber students to receive rigorous training in graduate-level biomedical research. This program, designed for students who are seriously considering joining a PhD graduate program following the completion of their undergraduate degree, is extremely successful with most trainees advancing for graduate study at well-known universities.
