On July 11th, 2024, the graduating class of Pathologists’ Assistants celebrated at a banquet held at The University Club in Durham, North Carolina.
During the event, Jonathan Chen, MHS, PA (ASCP)CM, received the Resident Teaching Award, which is given to a pathologists’ assistant whom residents have voted as having distinguished themselves in teaching effort and ability.
Chen is a staff pathologists’ assistant and preceptor on the surgical pathology service at Duke, teaching both residents and Pathologists’ Assistants students. He also leads the grossing lecture series, coordinating 20 lectures to provide didactic materials to reinforce clinical skills learned in the Duke Medical Pavilion lab that can be utilized by both the resident and student cohorts.
“Jonathan is a selfless teacher who consistently goes above and beyond to aid residents in their grossing abilities,” said Co-Chief Resident Bethany Freeland LeClair, MD. “Not only is he a great teacher; he is so approachable, friendly, and has taught all of the residents how to be a better and more efficient grossers.”
Nicole Tomsho, MHS, PA (ASCP)CM, received the 2024 Pamela Vollmer Teaching Award. Each year, the graduating Pathologists’ Assistants class awards this honor to the individual whose knowledge, teaching, and professionalism have had the most positive impact on their training. Tomsho serves as a staff pathologists’ assistant and preceptor for both the autopsy and surgical pathology services at Duke.
“Nicole’s enthusiasm and engaged teaching style help to enhance the resident and student learning experiences, and we’re fortunate to have her work with students in both of our clinical environments,” said Pathologists’ Assistant Program Director Michelle Johnson, MHS, PA (ASCP)CM.
