Giselle Y. López, MD, PhD, has been promoted to associate professor, effective Jan. 1st, 2024. She has been an integral member of Duke Pathology for five years. López studied for her MD and PhD degrees at Duke from 2005-2014, and returned in December 2018 as an assistant professor in Pathology. She is active in building pathways into pathology for pre-med students from diverse backgrounds and has developed a virtual pathology shadowing program.
“I’m so pleased to hear that Dr. López is being promoted,” said Professor of Pathology Laura Hale, MD, PhD. “Her work as a physician-scientist and an advocate for inclusion is an asset to this department and to Duke. She is well-deserving of this promotion.”
“Dr. López is an outstanding neuropathologist, brain tumor basic scientist, educator, mentor and colleague,” said Thomas J. Cummings, MD, professor of Pathology and Ophthalmology and Residency Program director. “We are fortunate to have her at Duke Pathology!”
In October 2023, she received the Spark Award from the Association for Women in Science (AWIS), in recognition of her strong leadership skills and for her vocal advocacy for diversity and inclusive scientific practices. Read more about the award and advocacy work here.
In July 2023, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) named López, to its prestigious ASCP 2023 40 Under Forty list. The list includes 40 high-achieving pathologists, pathology residents, and medical laboratory professionals under age 40 who are being honored for professional excellence.
