Dr. Elena M. Fenu Named to ASCP 40 Under Forty List

On July 8th, 2024, the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) named Elena M. Fenu, MD, to its prestigious ASCP 2024 40 Under Forty list. The list includes 40 high-achieving pathologists, pathology residents, and medical laboratory professionals under age 40 who are being honored for professional excellence, their contributions to the profession, and for their potential for future laboratory leadership.

Fenu was selected in part because of her work as a member of ASCP's Resident Council, where she leads the committee that supports the Pathology Ambassadors Program. Pathology Ambassadors are a group of residents and fellows who work to increase visibility for pathology and laboratory medicine careers

"I am honored to have been recognized by this program," said Fenu, one of the departments newest faculty members.

Fenu joined the Pathology Department on July 1st, 2024, as an assistant professor in Duke’s Hematopathology and Molecular Pathology divisions. Her academic interests include the study of myeloid neoplasms and their molecular drivers, with a particular focus on TP53-mutated myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia.

ASCP will select the top five individuals from the 40 honorees, who will each receive free registration to attend ASCP 2024 Annual Meeting from Sept. 3rd-6th in Chicago, Illinois, where they will be formally recognized. Winners will be chosen through a combination of public voting and committee selection.

The 40 honorees each will have the opportunity to share their knowledge about topics pertinent to pathology and laboratory medicine. You can follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #ASCP40UnderForty2024.

In 2023, two other Duke Pathology faculty members, Eric D. Carlsen, MD, PhD, FASCP, and Giselle Y. López, MD, PhD, FASCP, were named to the list as well. Read more

Applicants were asked to submit a resume and a personal statement on how they see themselves as an innovator in health care, or how they are contributing to leading innovations within the profession. The selection committee included two individuals each from the ASCP Pathology Council, Resident Council, and Council of Laboratory Professionals, as well as past 40 Under Forty honorees.
