Carolyn Glass, MD, PhD, associate professor of Pathology and assistant professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, has been invited to serve on Duke University School of Medicine’s (SOM) Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) MD/PhD Admissions Committee, where she will help recruit and select the next generation of physician-scientists.
In this role, she will contribute to the highly selective MSTP Program, which recruits and trains the next generation of leaders in academic medicine and biomedical research. Her appointment builds upon prior service on the Duke SOM MD Executive Admissions Committee (2021-2024) and reflects her ongoing commitment to shaping the future of medical education at Duke.
Glass brings a unique, broad perspective to this work, with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare. Her career spans multiple disciplines, including an early decade as a physician assistant in neurology, neurodegenerative disorders, and international health; a second decade in vascular surgery; and her most recent work as an autopsy and cardiothoracic pathologist.
“To be part of a physician-scientist faculty team tasked with the recruitment and mentorship of some of the brightest and most curious minds who will initiate the discovery of life-saving therapeutics, devices—any deliverable really—is truly rewarding,” said Glass.
Duke Pathology maintains a strong connection to the MSTP Program, with several faculty members among its graduates:
- Medical Director and Associate Vice President of Duke Health Laboratories Michael Datto, MD, PhD
- Professor Laura Hale, MD, PhD
- Professor and Senior Vice Chair David Howell, MD, PhD
- Associate Professor Giselle López, MD, PhD
- Associate Professor John F. Madden, MD
- Professor Emeritus Salvatore Pizzo, MD, PhD
Dr. Glass’s appointment continues this tradition of leadership and engagement in physician-scientist training at Duke.
