Grace Kirby Distinguished Professor of Pathology Soman Abraham, PhD, and Assistant Professor Brandi Johnson-Weaver, PhD, have been recognized by Duke University School of Medicine’s Office of Biomedical Graduate Education (OBGE) for their outstanding teaching.
The honor reflects the exceptional ratings the two faculty members received from students enrolled in the Spring 2026 PhD course “Molecular Aspects of Disease,” where they serve as instructors. Their recognition underscores a shared commitment to creating engaging, rigorous, and meaningful learning experiences for graduate trainees.
"It’s inspiring to see a graduate of Duke Pathology's program earn recognition for excellence in teaching for the same course she once took as a trainee," said Abraham, acknowledging Johnson-Weaver’s full-circle achievement.
“Dr. Abraham continues to serve as a role model for the research faculty in Pathology and across Duke by providing excellence in teaching along with his many years of research excellence,” said Herman Staats, PhD, director of the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory. “His continued devotion to teaching, research and mentorship sets an example for all faculty to follow.
"It’s great to see Dr. Johnson-Weaver continue to expand her skills as an academic faculty member by adding teaching excellence to her resume,” continued Staats, recognizing her growth as an educator.
Recognition from OBGE is based on rigorous evaluation criteria, including median student ratings of 4.5 or higher across all instructor characteristics, an overall effectiveness rating of at least 4.5, and a course response rate exceeding 50 percent. These benchmarks reflect not only strong student satisfaction but also active engagement in the learning process.
In acknowledging the awardees, Beth A. Sullivan, PhD, associate dean for research training, emphasized the lasting impact of their efforts: “Your effort has not gone unnoticed, and it is my pleasure to acknowledge the impact you made on our students. On behalf of OBGE, I extend my deepest gratitude for your teaching and your commitment to educational excellence.”
This recognition highlights Duke Pathology’s ongoing dedication to excellence in education and mentorship and to cultivating continuous learning and achievement for the next generation of scientists and physician-scientists.
