Michelle Johnson Promoted to Assistant Professor in Pathology

On Sept. 1, 2025, Michelle Johnson, MHS, PA (ASCP)CM, was promoted to assistant professor in pathology.  An alumna of the Duke Pathologists’ Assistant Program (’99), Johnson started her career at Duke as a staff pathologists’ assistant in the Surgical Pathology Laboratory.

After leaving Duke in 2000 she worked in community practices in Utah and Virginia and also served as the supervisor of the surgical pathology laboratories in the adult and children’s hospitals at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. In July 2021, Johnson returned to Duke as the Pathologists’ Assistant Program associate director, then assumed directorship in 2022.

Johnson also serves as the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants Board of Trustee (AAPA BOT) Adjunct for the Association of Pathologists’ Assistant Training Programs (APATP); as Duke Pathology photography course co-director; and as instructor in surgical and autopsy pathology.

“I am honored to receive this academic promotion,” said Johnson. “Thank you for your review of my work towards expanding my portfolio, my education, and contributions to the pathology community.”
