On August 1, 2026, You-Wen Qian (pronounced "Chian"), MD, PhD, joined Duke Pathology as a professor in the Division of Hematopathology. Qian is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, hematopathology, and clinical informatics.
Prior to joining Duke, Qian served as professor and director of the Clinical Flow Cytometry Laboratory in the Department of Pathology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York. He also served as program director of the Hematopathology Fellowship Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Qian's academic interests lie at the intersection of clinical pathology and informatics. His research focuses on advancing the automation of flow cytometry laboratories—not only in technical processing but also in diagnostic interpretation and laboratory operations through the application of advanced computational algorithms. He has been an early advocate of clinical decision support systems and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical pathology and flow cytometry, with several publications in these areas. He also has broad clinical and research interests in minimal residual disease (MRD) detection by flow cytometry.
Before beginning his pathology residency, Qian spent five years conducting cardiovascular research at Stanford University in Stanford, California. He has authored 37 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as numerous scientific abstracts.

Dr. Qian is a pioneering pathologist whose groundbreaking work at the intersection of pathology diagnostics with AI and bioinformatics will strengthen hematopathology practice in the Department."
Qian completed his anatomic and clinical pathology residency at New Jersey Medical School, Rutgers University, followed by a hematopathology fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He currently serves on the Quality and Standards Committee of the International Clinical Cytometry Society (ICCS), the Cellular Analysis and Flow Cytometry Committee of the International Society for Laboratory Hematology (ISLH), and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Advisory Panel developing guidelines for minimal residual disease detection in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
