Duke Department of Pathology is pleased to announce the appointment of Rohini Kannuswamy, MD, as associate medical director of the Division of Cytopathology.
Kannuswamy brings extensive expertise in cytopathology, gynecologic pathology, and fine-needle aspiration cytology to her new leadership role. She will work closely with division leadership to advance diagnostic excellence, support educational initiatives, and help guide the continued growth and innovation of the division.
Kannuswamy received her medical training in India, earning her MBBS from Coimbatore Medical College and completing a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, along with board certification in pathology. Motivated by a commitment to lifelong learning and a desire to expand her expertise, she later pursued a second residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine.
She subsequently completed a Surgical Pathology Fellowship focused on women's health, followed by a Cytopathology Fellowship at Duke University. Prior to joining the Duke faculty, Kannuswamy served as a pathologist at Labcorp in Burlington, North Carolina, where she developed extensive experience in cytopathology and gynecologic pathology.
Since joining Duke University Health System as an assistant professor of pathology in 2024, Kannuswamy has further strengthened her expertise in cytopathology, with particular emphasis on fine-needle aspiration cytology. Her academic and clinical interests also include the correlation of histopathologic and cytopathologic findings in gynecologic disease.
