Dr. Samah Ali Joins Duke Pathology Faculty

Duke Department of Pathology is pleased to welcome Samah Ali, MD, as an assistant professor in the Division of Hematopathology, effective Oct. 1, 2026.

Ali joins Duke after completing a hematopathology fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She earned her medical degree from the University of Khartoum Faculty of Medicine in Sudan and completed her pathology residency at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she served as Chief Resident during the 2023-2024 academic year. She is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Prior to pursuing specialty training in the United States, Ali practiced as a general practitioner in Sudan. During her residency and fellowship training, she developed a strong interest in hematopathology, particularly the diagnosis and classification of lymphoid neoplasms and lymphoma.

"We are excited to welcome Dr. Ali to Duke Pathology," said Ken H. Young, MD, PhD, vice chair for research and director of hematopathology. "Her excellent training, enthusiasm for teaching, and commitment to advancing patient care in hematologic malignancies make her a wonderful addition to our faculty."

At Duke, Ali will contribute to the division's high-volume hematopathology practice, caring for patients with lymphoma and other hematologic disorders while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across Duke Health.

Dr. Ali's clinical interests include the diagnosis and classification of hematologic neoplasms, with a particular focus on lymphoma. Her research interests include platelet biology and lymphoma. While at the University of Toledo Medical Center, she investigated the effects of uremic toxins on platelet dense granules. She also brings extensive teaching experience gained throughout residency and fellowship and looks forward to mentoring the next generation of pathologists.

“I am grateful and excited to begin this new chapter at Duke,” said Ali. “Duke offers an exceptional opportunity to grow as a hematopathologist, work with an outstanding team, and care for patients with lymphoma and other hematologic disorders. I look forward to learning from my colleagues, teaching residents and fellows, advancing my clinical and academic interests in lymphoma, and building meaningful relationships across the Duke community.”

Outside of work, Ali enjoys gardening, balloon shaping, and watching sports with her family.

Please join us in welcoming her to Duke Pathology.
