Jones presented a lecture titled "Looks Mitochondrial—But Is It? A Selection of Interesting Myopathology Cases," highlighting a collection of clinical biopsies from the Duke Muscle Pathology service. The cases featured histopathologic and ultrastructural findings suggestive of primary metabolic myopathy, which prompted detailed diagnostic evaluation.
During her presentation, Jones examined cases that proved to be genetic mitochondrial myopathies along with others that mimicked mitochondrial disease. She discussed the diagnostic workflow, potential pitfalls, and interpretive challenges involved in distinguishing true mitochondrial disorders from their imitators. She underscored the importance of integrating morphologic, ultrastructural, and clinical findings to reach an accurate diagnosis.
The colloquium brought together leading experts in neuromuscular pathology from around the world. Additional speakers included Werner Stenzel, MD, (Charité Hospital, Berlin, Germany), P. James Dyck, MD, (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota), Anne Schanzer, MD (Justus-Liebig-University, Giessen, Germany), and Judith Spies, MBBS, PhD (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia).
Jones is the medical director for Outreach and Business Development and the Electron Microscopy and Immunochemistry Laboratory. In addition to her clinical and outreach work, she is the director of the Neuropathology Fellowship Program. She also serves as the section head for Muscle & Nerve Pathology.
