
On July 1, 2025, Avani Pendse, MBBS, PhD, assumed the position of associate director of Quality Assurance (QA) and will work alongside Associate Professor John F. Madden, MD, who currently serves as QA director. Pendse will work closely with Madden in this newly-created role and will subsequently assume the responsibility of director of QA.
In collaboration with the division chiefs and leaders in anatomic pathology, the QA director is responsible for overseeing and managing all quality assurance activities spanning both the diagnostic and reporting functions. Some of the key responsibilities of this role include quality control, continuous improvement and staff education, data analysis, and communication with individual staff and regulatory compliance agencies.

Pendse joined Duke Pathology in 2017. Her clinical practice is focused on gastrointestinal, hepatic, and genitourinary pathology, and she has been active in translational research, mainly in gastrointestinal/liver pathology. She is currently the director of Duke’s Surgical Pathology Fellowship program and serves on multiple departmental and hospital committees.
