Drs. Grace Kwon and Avani Pendse Receive 2023 Best Author Award

Second-year Duke Pathology resident Grace Kwon, MD, PhD, and Associate Professor of Pathology Avani Pendse, MBBS, PhD, co-authored a page on PathologyOutlines.com that garnered the site’s $200 Best Author 2023 award on Feb. 8th, 2024.  Pathology outlines is a free online resource, highly accessible from all over the world, including in resource-limited settings.

Published in July 2023 the page, titled “Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus and GE Junction,” is an article in the regularly updated, comprehensive online textbook of surgical and clinical pathology, with extensive links to images (gross, microscopic, clinical, and others), virtual slides, and references. Those who might find the page useful include practicing surgical pathologists and pathology residents. By the end of 2023, the page had already received more than 26,000 views.

Chapters include clinical and surgical pathology topics as well as separate listings for immunohistochemical and other stains, including almost all CD markers, which are commonly used to differentiate immune cell types.

PathologyOutlines.com links only to images that do not require registration to view, and to virtual slides that do not require plug-ins. They include references with free full text, and no registration or login requirements. Pages are typically updated every three years. Newly updated topics are written by the named author and reviewed by an editor-in-chief or a deputy editor-in-chief and a member of the site’s editorial board.

PathologyOutlines.com makes its selection for the Best Author Awards by awarding submissions that have detailed and concise content. Winning pages feature numerous high-quality images created by the authors in multiple categories such as radiology, clinical, gross, frozen section, cytology, light microscopy, electron microscopy, and molecular pathology, as well as author-created diagrams, tables, videos, and image annotations."
