Duke Pathology Members Present at CAP25

Several Duke Pathology members attended The College of American Pathologists (CAP) Pathologists’ CAP25 Meeting on Sept. 13-16, 2025, in Orlando, Florida.

Assistant Professor Jadee Neff, MD, PhD, FCAP, led a session titled “The Pathologist’s Role in Diagnosing Idiopathic Multicentric Castleman Disease (iMCD).” In her interactive, case-based presentation, she provided a background and a review of the pathogenesis for Idiopathic Multicentric Castleman Disease (iMCD), a rare and possibly life-threatening disorder. She covered the diagnostic criteria for diagnosis, with a focus on the histopathologic features. Finally, she highlighted the importance of timely intervention and guidelines for management.

Neff teamed up with Associate Professor Avani Pendse, MD, PhD, FCAP, to lead a continuing medical education session titled “From Surgical Pathologist to Molecular Pathologist and Back: Optimizing Samples and Interpretations.” The course was attended by over 80 pathologists and provided a toolkit to pathologists who have limited experience in molecular genetic pathology, with the aim to help them maintain their grasp of the ever-evolving molecular testing landscape. They outlined an approach to using molecular tests based on diagnostic and therapeutic questions, cost considerations, and accessibility to tests, based on the practice setting. Furthermore, they delved into the details of selecting an optimal tissue specimen pertinent to the selected test and provided guidance on how to interpret and simplify the complex molecular pathology reports.

Neff and Pendse teamed up with Co-Chief Resident Abigail Hitt, MD, MEng, at the Residency and Fellowship Fair on Sun., Sept. 14, to assist Graduate Medical Education Program Coordinator Jawanna Bell with recruitment.

"It was great to talk to prospective applicants (possible future co-residents and co-fellows), while expressing how great our program at Duke is!” said Hitt.
