Dr. Wen-Chi Foo Named Associate Director of Surgical Pathology

Associate Professor of Pathology Wen-Chi Foo, MD, has been named as associate director of Surgical Pathology starting Jan. 1, 2026. She will continue to serve as section head of Duke’s Genitourinary (GU) Pathology Division.

“Dr. Foo has been instrumental this year in helping me transition to my duties as Surgical Pathology Director,” said Rajesh Dash, MD, vice chair for Anatomic Pathology and Informatics, director of Duke University Health System Anatomic Pathology Laboratories, and director of Surgical Pathology.

“Her innovation in creating the GU overflow service helped inspire creation of new Qgenda ‘Outreach’ services. These provide credit for those covering work from other hospitals, including Lake Norman. In addition, in her role as section head of the GU Division, Dr. Foo has created a culture that is welcoming, cohesive, and supportive. I’m excited to work with her to help optimize all of our surgical pathology services and scheduling. Please join me in welcoming her to her new role.

Foo obtained her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University before coming to Duke in 2004. She earned her MD degree and completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Duke, serving as chief resident in her final year. She left Duke briefly to complete her fellowship in cytopathology at Brigham and Womens’ Hospital, before she re-joined the Duke Department of Pathology as an assistant professor in 2013.

Her areas of clinical expertise include cytopathology and genitourinary surgical pathology. Foo’s research interests broadly center on investigating how current knowledge of molecular mechanisms of oncogenesis and tumor progression can be exploited to improve diagnosis in fine needle aspiration biopsy, as well as application of emerging technologies to the diagnosis of prostate cancer in surgical pathology specimens.
