The History of Pathology Society (HPS) invited Co-Chief Resident Natalya Ramirez, MD, PGY-3, to give a talk at its second mid-fall online meeting on Fri., Oct. 18th. The meeting theme was “Milestones and Pioneers in Pathology.” Ramirez gave a presentation titled “Déjà Vu – Reflecting on the 1918 Pandemic and Comparing Measures Taken Then to Developments Used During the COVID-19 Pandemic,” which earned her the Henry Azar Award at the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Annual Meeting in March 2024.
The meeting guest of honor was Associate Professor Marco Pizzi, PhD, from the University of Padua, Italy, who talked about “Giovanni Ghedini and the Origin of Bone Marrow Biopsy.”
Associate Professor Sergio Piña-Oviedo, MD, served as president of the HPS from 2023-2024.
“The mid-fall online meeting of the HPS was created with the intention of spreading the knowledge of the history of pathology and of the HPS in our community, particularly to the newer generations and to invite physicians to join the HPS,” said Piña-Oviedo. It is a great honor to have Dr. Ramirez do the opening talk as the recipient of last year’s Azar award of the HPS.”
The Henry Azar Award for USCAP Abstract in History of Pathology was named after Dr. Henry Azar, founder and a charter member of HPS. The granting of the award is based on the submission of an abstract by a trainee during USCAP, or making a significant contribution to the Society during the past year. In addition to earning the honor of presenting at the HPS mid-fall online meeting, Ramirez also received $500.
