
On July 1, 2025, Assistant Professor of Pathology Huihua Li, MD, PhD, was named as associate director of Duke Autopsy Pathology.
Director of Autopsy Service and Division Chief of Duke Cardiovascular Pathology Service Carolyn Glass, MD, PhD, will continue to serve as Autopsy director until Jan. 1, 2026 when Li will transition to the role.
Li obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of South China, Hengyang, Hunan. He completed his PhD and postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh, where his research focused on acute lung injury, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, lung biology, and immunology. He subsequently did his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2018-2022), followed by a dedicated thoracic pathology fellowship under the mentorship of Aliya Husain, MD, at the University of Chicago (2022-2023). He is a board-certified pathologist in AP/CP.
Li joined the Duke Department of Pathology as an assistant professor in July 2023, and he practices pulmonary, cardiovascular, and autopsy pathology. His current academic interests include investigation of new diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in lung neoplasms and tumor microenvironment. Li has published four book chapters and more than 30 peer-reviewed papers. He is a member of the Immunohistochemistry Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and an active member of the Pulmonary Pathology Society (PPS), the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology (SCVP), the International Mesothelioma Panel, and the Chinese American Pathologists Association (CAPA).
Glass initially trained as a vascular surgeon with a focus on endovascular/interventional procedures through the 0+5 Integrated Vascular Surgery Program at the University of Rochester Medical Center from 2007-2011. She completed residency in anatomic pathology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic pathology, also at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and another fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in pulmonary/cardiac transplant pathology. Duke Pathology wishes to thank Glass for her dedication and leadership for the past seven years as director of the service.
