On April 21, 2025, Carlos Prieto-Granada, MD, joined Duke Dermatopathology and Soft Tissue and Bone Pathology as an associate professor. Originally from Asuncion, Paraguay, Prieto-Granada attended medical school at the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion, then came to the United States as a research fellow at Tufts Medical Center under the guidance of the late Martin C. Mihm Jr., MD.
Prieto-Granada’s interests include neoplastic pathology within dermatopathology (melanocytic and skin adnexal neoplasms); soft tissue pathology (nerve sheath tumors); and non-neoplastic pathology, such as the histopathology of infections. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts, over 15 book chapters, review articles, and online resources, and multiple abstracts. He is the section editor for the Dermatopathology and Pulmonary/Thoracic Pathology of Human Pathology Reports Journal and is part of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Dermatopathology Abstract Review Committee.
Prieto-Granada completed his Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, and completed fellowships at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (oncologic surgical pathology with focus on soft tissue pathology) and the University of South Florida / Moffitt Cancer Center (dermatopathology). He is board-certified in AP/CP and in dermatopathology.
Upon completing his training, Prieto-Granada became an assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he was the director of both the immunohistochemistry and the tissue core research laboratories. He then joined Vanderbilt University Medical Center Pathology Department as an associate professor and director of the bone, skin, and soft tissue service. He also served as director of the histology and immunohistochemistry laboratories.
Prieto-Granada enjoys music concerts (contemporary and classical music), films, and is an avid collector of both records and films. He likes going to the beach and hiking in the forest with his wife, Julieta, and their 10-year-old Labrador mix, Suki.
