Diana Alame, MD, MBE, has joined Duke Pathology as Assistant Professor/Associate Director for the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory.
Alame graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, with a healthcare scholarship with the United States Air Force (USAF). Her professional experience with the USAF began first as an intern in Emergency Medicine and then as a Flight Surgeon. As a military physician, she managed special operational status and the care of servicemembers and their families. In her last two years of service, Alame went on to lead as the commander of the Flight Medicine Clinic, where she oversaw operations.
After military service, Alame completed Clinical Pathology Residency and Medical Microbiology Fellowship Programs at Massachusetts General Hospital. During that time, she also completed a master’s degree in Bioethics at Harvard Medical School. She went on to become the Medical Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Alame’s academic interests include the careful analysis of the clinical impact and implementation of novel diagnostics, including rapid identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests. She also studies the laboratory’s role in clinical decision support tools, interpretive resulting, test utilization, and antimicrobial stewardship efforts. “I believe clinical laboratories are uniquely positioned to both serve individual patients and as force multipliers for broader initiatives in optimizing medical care,” noted Alame.
