Abigail “Abbey” Hitt, MD, MEng, PGY2, (née Roth) presented a poster at the biennial Pulmonary Pathology Society (PPS) meeting in New York City from June 20-22, 2024.
The poster highlighted an interesting case that Assistant Pathology Professor John Carney, MD, and Hitt saw while on service: a patient presented with chronic hemoptysis (coughing up blood) two years after aspirating the contrast agent barium sulfate during a swallow study. Imaging revealed multifocal, calcific hyperdensities in the left lower lobe which grossly appeared white and chalky. Microscopically, there was marked chronic inflammation with fibrosis and abundant polarizable material within the alveolar interstitium ̶ interconnected spaces filled with moving fluid ̶ and airways.
