Francis Sun, DVM, DACLAM, MBA, has been selected to join the Council of Accreditation for AAALAC International, which is comprised of animal care and use professionals and researchers from around the world. This is an acknowledgment of his expertise by colleagues on the AAALAC Council and his demonstrated competency as an ad hoc consultant and site visitor. Only a few ad hoc consultants are selected to the Council. Dr. Sun serves as associate director and Chief of Clinical Services for USDA-regulated species in the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR).
“I consider this wonderful for his career, and also a positive reflection of Duke’s animal program,” said Director of the Duke Division of Laboratory Animal Resources John Norton, DVM, PhD.
The Council promotes quality and continuous improvement of laboratory animal well-being, the health and safety of personnel, and animal-based research itself. It conducts peer reviews of animal care and use programs, conferring an accreditation status, educational efforts, and ongoing communications with stakeholders.
Sun joined the Department of Pathology as an Assistant Professor in February 2022. He attended North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine in 2004. He then completed a Masters of Business Administration at East Carolina University Business School in 2019. His current research interests are in ferrets as models for immunology and vaccine development as well as non-human primates and swine as models for transplant rejection.
