Duke Trainees Present at CAP Annual Meeting

Duke Pathology fourth-year resident Bangchen Wang, MD, PhD, and Duke medical student Ian Taylor-Cho, BA, attended the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Annual Meeting, from Oct. 7th-10th in Chicago, IL.

Wang presented the poster he co-authored with Rajesh Dash, MD, titled “Improving Usage of Epic’s Laboratory Search Tool SlicerDicer Among Pathology Faculty and Staff.”  SlicerDicer is a self-service reporting tool in the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system. Its various models present de-identified information from Epic's Caboodle database, allowing users to find the data they need to investigate a hunch, and to refine their searches to improve their understanding of the data.

Taylor-Cho presented a poster he co-authored with Thomas J. Cummings, MD, Wen-Chi Foo, MD, Xiaoyin "Sara" Jiang, MD, titled “Eye Cytology, A Closer Look: Diagnostic Performance of Eye Cytology at a Single Tertiary Care Center.”  It describes the diagnostic performance of eye cytology - a diagnostic test that evaluates cells from the eye to help treat and monitor ocular diseases - as compared to histologic diagnosis, which is made by examining tissues and cells under a microscope.

In June 2023, Taylor-Cho received a CAP Distinguished Medical Student Award. These awards are given to medical students in any year of training for outstanding achievement, great aptitude, or great interest in pathology. They honor the students’ initiative in learning about pathology and participating in pathology-related activities.
