Dr. Victor Roggli Publishes New Edition of Pathology of Asbestos-Associated Diseases

On Aug. 8, 2025, the fourth edition of Pathology of Asbestos-Associated Diseases, by Professor Victor Roggli, MD, was published. This new edition includes insights gained from new epidemiologic studies and animal studies. It explores the role of various asbestos fiber types in disease pathogenesis, offering critical insights into their biological impact. The book also serves as a practical guide for identifying causative agents in individual cases of asbestos-related illness. Designed as a key resource, it is particularly valuable for pathologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, and specialists in occupational medicine.

Multiple members of Duke Pathology’s faculty contributed to the project. Professor Elizabeth Pavlisko, MD, has been added as an editor. Adjunct Associate Professor Thomas Sporn, MD, and Roggli are returning editors. Contributors include Assistant Professor Huihua Li, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor John Carney, MD, Assistant Professor Jeffrey Arnold, MD, Associate Professor Carolyn Glass, MD, and Associate Professor Sergio Pina-Oviedo, MD. Contributors who trained at Duke previously include Anupama Sharma, MD, Frank Schneider, MD, and Tim Oury, MD, PhD, who also serves as an editor.

Roggli is one of the world’s leading Pulmonary Pathologists with expertise in pneumoconiosis and mesothelioma. He specializes in the use of analytical scanning electron microscopy to identify and to quantify asbestos and other inorganic particulates in lung tissue samples.

He began his career at Duke in 1980 and was first appointed as a professor in 1994. In 2020, The Pulmonary Pathology Society (PPS) presented him with a
PPS Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding clinical and academic contributions to the field of thoracic pathology and his service to the PPS over the years.
