Dr. Thomas J. Cummings Hosted Six Premedical Duke Student-Athletes this Summer

Professor of Pathology and Ophthalmology and Residency Program Director Thomas J. Cummings, MD, served as faculty for the Duke Collegiate Athletic Premedical Experience (CAPE) program for the summer of 2025. He hosted six student-athletes this year to introduce them to pathology and to experience a day in the life of a neuropathologist.

CAPE is a mentoring program at Duke that provides female student-athletes exposure to the field of medicine by giving them the opportunity to shadow Duke doctors in their clinical work and prepare them for applying to medical school.

“I am honored to help mentor our Duke undergraduate premedical female student-athletes and to be a resource for them during their medical school journey and beyond,” Cummings said.

This was the third year in a row that Cummings has served as a CAPE faculty member. CAPE was co-founded by Henry S. Friedman, MD, and fellow brain tumor center deputy, Allan H. Friedman, MD
