
Assistant Professor John M. Carney, MD, will continue to serve on the Duke Health Integrated Practice's (DHIP) Physician Advisory Council (PAC) for the upcoming year, representing the Department of Pathology. The PAC is a selected body of faculty from their respective departments from across the health system who serve as an important two-way steam of communication from DHIP leadership to DHIP faculty members. Concerns such as compensation, operational challenges, and health system growth and its impacts, etc., are among the important items the group has been discussing. The upcoming year will continue to be an exciting time of change, and effective communication among the DHIP faculty is crucial to effectively in a positive direction.
In March 2025, Carney was named as medical director of the Duke Medical Pavilion Surgical Pathology Laboratory. In this role, he ensures a seamless transition of specimens from the operative suites to the gross lab and from there to histology. He also serves as medical director of the Pathologists’ Assistant Program in close collaboration with its program director.
Throughout his time in clinical practice, Carney has covered surgical pathology services in the areas of pulmonary, cardiac, and autopsy pathology. His clinical interests include non-neoplastic pulmonary pathology, with a focus on pneumoconioses and interstitial lung disease. He also maintains a strong interest in pleural malignancies such as mesothelioma. These clinical activities are complimented by an enjoyment in teaching and medical education of medical students, residents, fellows, and pathology assistants.
During his time at Duke and the University of Rochester, Carney has been involved with various departmental programs and committees, including many leadership roles. He has also taken on roles outside the department and currently serves as a member on the College of American Pathologists Surgical Pathology Committee.
