Assistant Professor Ruhan Wei, PhD, presented at the annual American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) meeting in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 18, 2025.
She co-led a session titled “Selection of Automation for the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory” with Joe Wiencek, PhD, medical director and associate professor of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. They highlighted the rewarding and arduous process of upgrading lab analyzers and automation and detailed Vanderbilt University Hospital's off-site laboratory move.
They also discussed the importance of rigorous planning, strategic decision-making for a successful project, and interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, lab sections, vendors, information technology, engineering, and leadership.
They covered the following details:
- Request for information and request for proposal (RFI/RFP) submission and review
- Discipline-specific versus total lab automation
- Single-vendor versus multi-vendor solutions
- Consolidation and experience with a large off-site laboratory move
Wei's clinical research interests include clinical chemistry, toxicology, endocrinology, data science, and the clinical application of LC-MS/MS.
