Duke pathology was well-represented at this year’s American Association for Neuropathology (AANP) annual meeting in Monterey, CA, from June 8-11, 2023. In attendance were faculty members Karra Jones, MD, PhD, and Giselle Y. López, MD, PhD, as well as senior and junior neuropathology fellows Vanessa L. Smith, MD, and Gregory Chamberlin, MD. Duke alumni Rhonda Mittenzwei, MD, and William Harrison, MD, also attended.
Jones co-presented the Pre-Meeting Symposium, titled "Neuromuscular Pathology: Focused Insights for General and Academic Practice," and presented the Special Course lecture titled "Nerve Biopsies for the Evaluation of Acquired Peripheral Neuropathies."
López received the Lucien J. Rubinstein Award for the Best Paper in Neuro-Oncology at the conference for her presentation of a platform abstract titled "Spatial Transcriptomic Profiling of Hypercellular Nodules Reveals Activation of Cholesterol Biosynthesis and Synaptogenesis Pathways."
Smith presented a platform abstract titled "Survey of Neoplastic and Malformative Lesions in Patients with Surgical Resection for Epilepsy at a Single Institution." Chamberlin presented a poster titled "IDH-Mutant Astrocytomas Demonstrate Globally Decreased CpG Island Methylation After Temozolomide: A Matched Cohort Study," and presented a case at the Diagnostic Slide session that was revealed to be a collision tumor between oligodendroglioma, IDH-mutant, 1p/19q-codeleted and glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype.
Mittenzwei presented a platform titled "Evaluating the Spatial Relationship Between Microhemorrhages and Axonal Injury," as well as a poster titled “Association of Traumatic Brain Injury with Vessel Mineralization in Young Adult Men.”
