On Oct. 26, 2024, William Jeck, MD, PhD, and Karra Jones, MD, PhD, presented breakout sessions at the Imagine 2024 and Beyond: Taking Your Laboratories into the Future Continuing Medical Education (CME) Conference at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Jeck discussed Duke’s digital pathology evolution with a talk titled “Intentional Implementation of Digital Pathology: A Gradualist Focus and AI Tools.” He discussed implementation of digital systems at Duke, including its outside slide scanning system and work to implement AI tools.
Jones’ talk was titled “Molecular Integration in Neuropathology.” She discussed the evolution of diagnostic neuropathology with updates in the 2016 and 2021 World Health Organization’s (WHO) classification of tumors of the Central Nervous System (CNS) requiring the performance and integration of molecular information with histopathologic findings. She also covered practical aspects of how molecular integration functions and the increased time commitments for neuropathologists to perform this work, which is entirely unaccounted for with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding and medical billing.
The conference featured sessions for pathologists, residents, fellows, pathologists’ assistants, and medical laboratory professionals at all levels of practice. Attendees included members of Duke, The University of Chapel Hill, East Carolina University, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, and Atrium Health Charlotte. With a blend of traditional lectures by esteemed faculty, interactive audience participation, and insightful panel discussions, the event offered a rich learning experience. Concurrent sessions covered essential knowledge and practice gaps and explored emerging trends in the discipline.
The planning committee included Duke University Health System’s (DUHS) Clinical Laboratories Education/Training Coordinator Laurelin Younger, CG(ASCP)CM, and Diana Cardona, MD, MBA.
