Wei Chen, MD, has been promoted to associate professor in the Department of Pathology. Since joining the department in 2021, Chen has built an outstanding reputation as a gastrointestinal (GI) and liver pathologist, educator, and mentor.
“Wei is incredibly diligent and always goes the extra mile,” said Professor of Pathology Chanjuan Shi, MD, PhD. “She has distinguished herself as an exemplary GI/Liver pathologist. In addition, she is a great colleague to work with.”
In 2025, she was named director of Duke’s Surgical Pathology Gastrointestinal (GI) Fellowship Program, succeeding Associate Professor William Jeck, MD, PhD. In this role, she oversees the training and professional development of future GI pathologists while continuing her clinical and academic contributions to the department.
“Dr. Chen has proven leadership in our GI division, mentoring many of our residents, including some future GI fellows, both in research projects and at the microscope,” said Jeck. “Our fellows have and will continue to thrive under her guidance."
Chen began her medical training at Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China, where she earned her MD degree. She subsequently completed an internal medicine residency and medical oncology fellowship at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital of Zhejiang University before pursuing a career in pathology in the United States.
She completed Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency training at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals in Cleveland, followed by a surgical pathology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She then completed subspecialty fellowship training in gastrointestinal pathology at the University of Pittsburgh.
Reflecting on her promotion, Chen expressed gratitude for the support she has received at Duke.
“It has been a privilege to work with such an outstanding department, and I appreciate the opportunities, mentorship, and collegiality I have received here,” said Chen. “I look forward to continuing to contribute and grow with the team.”
Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved achievement.
