Dr. Meg Lee Delivers Talk about HIV Blood Supply and Donor Deferral Policies

Cytopathology Fellow Meg Lee, MD, was hosted by Nancy Henshaw, MPH, PhD, assistant technical director of Duke Clinical Microbiology Laboratory (CMB), and asked to present her Pathology Grand Rounds lecture in person to microbiology technicians as a “Lunch and Learn” session on Wed., July 17th, 2024, at Duke CMB.

Lee’s talk, titled “Bad Blood With the FDA: Evolving Blood Donor Deferral Policies for Men Who Have Sex With Men,” traced the evolution of blood donor deferral policies for men who have sex with men in response to HIV in the blood supply. She delivered the talk to a packed room, and much discussion ensued afterward. 

Additionally, Medical Director of Duke Transfusion Services Nick Bandarenko, MD, asked Lee to share her work with the Transfusion Service in Duke North on Thursday, July 24th, 2024, as continuing education for the technologists.

Finally, Lee has been invited to give her talk in August as an hour-long platform presentation at the National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly in New York City.               

Lee served as co-chief resident of the Duke Pathology Residency Program from 2022-2023.  In April 2023, she represented pathology residents and fellows across the state as an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Society of Pathologists (NCSP) at their Annual Meeting in Charlotte, N.C.  In September 2023, In September 2023, she was appointed chair of the NCSP inaugural Trainee Advisory Council (TAC). In 2022, she received the Foundation of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) Resident and Fellow Travel Scholarship for the American Society of Cytopathology/International Congress of Cytology Scientific Meeting, which took place in November 2022.
