Thomas J. Cummings, MD, Professor of Pathology and Ophthalmology, and Residency Program Director, is pleased to announce the Foundation Medicine elective rotation for upper-level residents is underway, and to great initial reviews. The rotation gives residents exposure in an industry setting to precision medicine and the role of advanced molecular testing to evaluate the genomic landscape.
“The FMI rotation is awesome,” says Taylor Forns, MD, PGY-4. “The rotation is invaluable given the focus on PD-L1 testing and NGS. There is a great work culture at the company, and they strive to make that culture paramount in what they do. They also ask you to work on a project while there, and I have been working on a paper together with a team from Canada, and we will be publishing by the end of the month. I think that every resident should rotate there. It has certainly broadened my horizons to what a career in pathology could look like. Plus, it is great to make additional contacts outside of Duke that are willing to plug you in with different people around the country.” Evelyna Kliassov, MD, PGY-3, reports, “I am at Foundation Medicine and really love it. It’s a great rotation. I am beginning to work on research involving liquid biopsies for thyroid diagnoses, and KRAS mutations in CRC.”
