Duke Pathology Faculty Members and Trainees Serve as Editors and Authors of Upcoming Mesothelioma Book

Duke Pathology’s Elizabeth N. Pavlisko, MD, Victor L. Roggli, MD, and the University of Pittsburgh’s Tim D. Oury, MD, PhD, who was formerly at Duke, are primary editors of Mesothelioma in the 21st Century: From Asbestos Exposure to Precision Medicine, which will be submitted to Springer in September 2027 for publishing.  A number of Duke Pathology faculty members and trainees contributed content. In addition, there are several authors who were formerly at Duke.

“Dr. Pavlisko and I are very excited about this project, which involves state-of-the-art information concerning this relatively rare malignancy,” said Roggli.

The book highlights the latest approaches to diagnosing mesothelioma, including improved imaging and the latest immunohistochemical stains that help confirm the disease. It also reviews what we currently know about causes, including the changing role of asbestos exposure. The authors explain key biological processes involved in how mesothelioma develops, including how cells change over time and the immune system’s role. Finally, it outlines current treatment options and what they mean for patient outcomes.

Duke-affiliated authors contributed to the following sections:

Part 1, General Considerations:

  • Chapter 3: “Experimental Animal Studies and Pathogenetic Mechanisms,” Tim D. Oury (formerly at Duke, now a professor in the Division of Molecular Genomic Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh). Other authors: Timothy N. Perkins, Nadine Oury, Brian Cunniff.
