Drs. Cardona and Datto featured for their leadership during the pandemic

Dr. Michael Datto, MD, PHD, FCAP, and Dr. Diana M. Cardona, MD, FCAP, are featured for their leadership of the Clinical Laboratories at Duke University Health System during the pandemic in the February 2022 College of American Pathologists’ Executive Briefing.

“It always seemed that no matter how many more tests we added, there was a need for more. And it was this rapid iteration that allowed us to stay maybe a one-quarter step in front. [We were] nimble in a way that we, as a health system, at least, didn’t have to be previously,” said Dr. Cardona.

“Health systems around the world got a smallglimpse of what the world would look like if a crucial test – a key part of practicing medicine- wasn’t available. Without it, the practice of medicine shuts down. We can’t do elective or non-emergent surgeries. Clinics close and routine preventive and maintenance health care stops. We needed COVID testing to ensure the safety of our patients and providers and to continue to provide care. Without it, we could no longer practice medicine. That was an eye-opener for the world,” remarked Dr. Datto.
