DEI Committee Hosts Book Club

Duke Pathology hosted an inaugural Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee Book Club on June 8, 2022. 15 Committee members met in person in the Davison Building to discuss Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, by Emmanuel Acho.

Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Co-Leader Anne Buckley, MD, PhD, suggested the book and has dedicated significant time and energy to support the Committee’s work. The Department offered free copies of the book to the first 20 members to RSVP for the event. The audio and print versions of the book were also available to borrow from Duke Library.

Participants enjoyed sharing a bit about their backgrounds, and had an open, honest conversation centered on the book. Avani Pendse, MD, PhD, and Wen-Chi Foo, MD, hosted the event on behalf of the Committee, and Senior Business Manager, Pamela Harris, Staff Committee Co-Leader (along with Kelly Macklin), arranged for refreshments.

The Committee plans to host two book clubs every year, with the next one planned in Fall 2022. It also will have ad-hoc gatherings in between these biannual events to continue conversations about the books discussed, for those who want to continue the conversation.
