Dr. Andrea Deyrup has been giving Grand Rounds presentations across the country with her colleague, Dr. Joseph Graves, Jr. an evolutionary biology professor from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. The presentations focus on how race is addressed in medical education, particularly in the canonical Robbins pathology textbooks. One of the first of these teleconferences was a Duke Pathology Grand Rounds in March 2021 that attracted a large local and national audience and led to multiple invitations for subsequent extramural talks, including a named lectureship at Harvard School of Medicine honoring Dr. Stanley Robbins himself.
There has been so much interest in this topic that in early October 2021, Dr. Deyrup started a YouTube channel and website featuring her videos: www.pathologycentral.org. In addition to addressing general topics of race in the medical curriculum, Dr. Deyrup is recording videos for each disease entity associated with socially defined race in the 10th edition of Robbins Basic Pathology, a book she's revising with particular focus on racial equity, as a co-editor with Drs. Vinay Kumar, Abul Abbas and Jon Aster.
Another focus on the website is undergraduate pathology education. With so many online and educational resources focused on “high-yield” topics and mnemonics for Board preparation, Dr. Deyrup is offering a thorough approach to pathophysiology. Her motto is “deeper understanding = better medicine” and in each video, she carefully dissects disease processes and links the pathophysiology with patient care.
