We are pleased to announce that Sarah Bean, MD, will serve as Vice-Chair of Faculty for the Department of Pathology. In this role, she will oversee matters of faculty development, professionalism, well-being, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Bean has developed expertise in teaching, leadership, and mentoring and will use those talents to develop robust programs to support and assist pathology faculty at all career stages.
Bean joined faculty at Duke University as an Assistant Professor in 2006. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor in 2020. Her clinical activities encompass diagnostic breast and gynecologic surgical pathology, intraoperative consultations, and cytopathology. She has developed expertise in medical education. She currently serves as program director for the Cytopathology fellowship. Bean has served on numerous departmental, institutional, and national education-related committees. Most notably, she served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee in the College of American Pathologists (CAP). She was also a member of the CAP Council on Education. Currently, she is a member of the CAP Publications Committee, a Pathology Education Section Editor for Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and a member of the Editorial Board for CAP Today. Bean also is faculty for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program, a leadership program for developing medical educators.
Bean has been recognized for her excellence in teaching and education. She received the Bernard F. Fetter Teaching Award in Pathology in 2009 and again in 2014. She received the AAMC Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA) Medical Education Scholarship Award for Outstanding Presentation twice. She was one of seven Duke Academy for Health Professions Education and Academic Development (AHEAD) members recognized in the inaugural class of Fellow members. She was also recognized by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) as a 40 Under Forty honoree in 2015. She received the CAP Outstanding Educator Award in 2020.
