Balaban places third at the ASDP 22nd Annual Duel in Dermatopathology

Alexandra Balaban MD, PGY-4, won third place at the ASDP 22nd Annual Duel in Dermatopathology Resident Abstract Competition that occured during the American Society of Dermatopathology 58th annual meeting. Her oral presentation, entitled “A Case of S100 Negative Indeterminate Dendritic Cell Tumor,” was chosen out of more than 300 submitted abstracts to enter this competition; 18 studies in total competed in this duel. The presented abstract highlights the utility of next-generation sequencing in classifying indeterminate dendritic cell tumors (IDCTs). This is the first report of an ETV3-NCOA2 fusion co-occurring with an S100 negative phenotype, supporting the hypothesis that the S100 negative phenotype is a variant of IDCT and not a different entity. Dr. Balaban will receive a monetary reward, a certificate,  and a copy of the book titled: ‘Barnhill’s Dermatopathology Challenge: Self-Assessment & Review.’
