Yan Invited Speaker and Co-Chair at AACR Annual Meeting

Hai Yan, MD, PhD, was an invited speaker at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2016 in New Orleans, LA.  His talk about Molecular Classification of Malignant Gliomas was presented in the Recent Advances in Organ Site Research section.  Dr. Yan discussed major advances in translating tumor genomics to clinical relevance for gliomas, the most common type of human primary brain tumor. Neuro-Oncology is in a revolution of glioma reclassification, transitioning from subjective histology to somatic mutations. Dr. Yan’s pioneer research has led to the discovery of frequent mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (IDH1 and IDH2) and the promoter of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), two significant discoveries in glioma genomics. Analyzing gliomas based on the genetic signatures allows for the classification of these patients into distinct cohorts, with unique prognosis and survival. These advances will have a major impact on clinical trial design and interpretation.
