Howell Appointed Senior Vice Chair & Chair of APT Committee

I am pleased to announce that Dr. David Howell has been appointed Senior Vice Chair of the Pathology department. Additionally, he will serve as Chair of the Committee on Appointment, Promotion and Tenure (APT). In this role, Dr. Howell will be in charge of a very important area of our department’s academic function.

Dr. Howell received his BA, PhD in Microbiology and Immunology, and MD degrees from Duke University.  He remained at Duke where he completed his residency training and fellowship in immunopathology in the Department of Pathology.  Dr. Howell joined the faculty in 1988 and was appointed professor in 2006.  From 1999-2012, he served as chief of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  His diagnostic and research interests are in the areas of renal, transplant, and ultrastructural pathology.  He served as president of the Society for Ultrastructural Pathology from 2010-2012 and is author of more than 120 journal articles and book chapters.

Dr. Howell will succeed Dr. Stanley Robboy, who has served in this position for many years and played a pivotal role in maintaining the high academic standards of our department. Dr. Robboy is a longtime member of our department and an internationally renowned pathologist with specialized expertise in GYN pathology. He is a household name in the pathology community due to his many important contributions to our field, including being a past president of the College of American Pathologists. Our department is very fortunate to have had such a respected and experienced leader in this role for many years. I am extremely thankful that Dr. Robboy will remain with the department and will be closely engaged with the APT committee by lending his vast experience and offering valuable guidance to our department.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Robboy for many years of dedicated service and in congratulating Dr. Howell on his new position.
