Cardona Appointed Director of DUHS Anatomic Pathology Laboratories

Cardona Appointed Director of DUHS Anatomic Pathology Laboratories

It is my sincere pleasure to announce the appointment of Diana Cardona MD to the position of Director of the DUHS Anatomic Pathology Laboratories. Dr. Cardona trained in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Florida where she also did a GI and Hepatobiliary Fellowship. Shortly after completing her training, about ten years ago, Dr. Cardona came to Duke to practice anatomic pathology. For close to five years, Dr. Cardona has served as the Laboratory Director for Immunopathology, Histology, DMP Surgical Pathology, Pathology record control and transcription.  During this time, she has managed tremendous change in these labs:  a new laboratory information system, a new location, new SOPs and workflows, new policies, and new challenges in the way (and amount) that we get paid for the work that we do.  Her successes are well reflected in the recent flawless CAP inspection of her labs. Her successes are also reflected in her national recognition as a leader at intersection of the quality of laboratory and pathology professional services and payment for these services.  For her work in helping to guide CMS and educate all in the metrics for the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Quality Payment Program, Dr. Cardona was recently awarded the CAP’s Public Service Award. Dr. Cardona is also an outstanding surgical pathologist and has developed significant expertise in GI and Soft Tissue Tumor pathology over the past 10 years as a faculty member in our Pathology Department at Duke.

In her new role, Dr. Cardona will work with the Directors of our AP laboratories and our Operation Director for Anatomic Pathology to ensure high quality services and the safety of our patients across all DUH Anatomic Pathology Laboratories.  She will develop strategies for growth and a vision for our AP labs that ensures that our labs meet the ever increasing and complex needs of our practicing anatomic pathologists and the patients they serve.  Finally, Dr. Cardona will partner with the health system to ensure that our labs are leaders in health care redesign at Duke.  Please join me in welcoming Dr. Cardona to this new role.
